Why I'm Writing More, And Actually Writing

Published:

I tried starting a blog for years, somehow it never quite caught on. I’d post intermittently for a month or two before eventually giving up. Starting a YouTube channel and creating video content scratched that itch for a while. Somehow, I just found it easier to hit record and go rather than think about what sitting down and writing.

But skills that aren’t used atrophy. And with the rise of AI to basically do everything, it seemed like a good time to revisit writing. Without AI, without any help. Just me scribbling down my thoughts. For the next 30 days, I’m loosely following the ‘Ship 30 for 30’ approach. Writing short pieces, every day, for the next 30 days.

Nobody might read it, that’s ok. Think of it as skill building, as keeping skills sharp. In much the same way I still write some code, even though and LLM could generate it for me. I for one don’t fancy offloading all my thinking, or my skills, to an AI owned by a US tech company. You shouldn’t either.

Topics may vary, in my head ideas bounce around about systems thinking. Stocism. Philsophy. Software Architecture. Maybe even some lessons I’ve learned from picking up golf again. It might be practical, it might be random musings about something I’ve read.

The point isn’t to get a million subscribers, or become the next big things on substack. The point is to keep skills sharp, to write regularly, and to think.
